A Captain's Wife

Marcy

Iwoke up to the gentle sway of the ship beneath me, the creaking of its wooden frame making me long for our beach home before I even got my eyes fully open.

But when I finally did, I was alone in the cozy bed with Edmund’s side untouched.

It made me smile that he’d found a reason to hold his head high after all the time he’d been stranded. Yet, knowing already I would often wake up that way, I sighed and laid my hand on his pillow.

Understanding he was up and about, plotting our course for our first port of call in this strange land, I swung my legs over the edge of the bed.

Cringing at what I found in the dresser mirror across from me, I combed my fingers through my messy hair. “Damn, Marcy. You’re supposed to be a captain’s wife, not a damn troll doll.”

Blowing air through my lips, I scanned the room for something I might fashion into something to wear. The cabinet overflowed with the finest clothing I’d ever seen, but nothing to fit this ass. “Awesome.”

Turning back to the mirror, I shrugged at the scraps of sweater Edmund insisted I wore no matter what as I pulled the brush from the top. “I hope they have a mall at the next stop.”

Not that the food wasn’t lovely here. But with Edmund hardly around at all anymore, I missed home a little more than I cared to admit. “A pizza shop would be nice, too.”

Peeking out the door first, I crept from the bedroom, following his scent until I got to the other end of the hall, and his voice came around the doorway.

I leaned against the frame, my mouth opened to speak to him, but not a single moment came during his conversation with the sailors hovering over the map on his desk for me even to say hello.

Being the center of his universe one moment and only a second thought the next crushed me. I slunk back into the hallway to avoid disturbing him and turned toward the clatter of dishes in the kitchen.

Stepping inside, I came face to face with the cookie-cutter half-naked sailor who fancied himself a chef.

One arm swam in black tattoos up to his neck, and a single braid held back his snow-white hair. Pulsing with every breath he took, his chiseled muscles heaved at me as he peeked up from the carrot he sliced through. “Lovely morning to you, Missus Heddle.”

I nodded to him as I crossed my arms over myself. “And to you,” — all these men were basically the same to me, and keeping them all straight was becoming a struggle — “Chopper. Your name is Chopper, isn’t it?”

He lifted his knife tip and winked at me. “I’m honored that you remembered me, ma’am.” Returning to his task, he arched his brow back at me. “What can I do for you, my lady?”

I puffed my cheeks as I searched the room for something to get into.
